Have you typed a question into Google lately and noticed a full answer appear at the top of the page — before any websites? That’s Google’s AI at work, and it’s the biggest change to how people search in decades. As the folks who build and manage websites for local businesses, we’ve been watching this shift closely. Here’s what’s actually happening — and what it means for your business here in Pleasant Hill.
What’s changing
Google now shows AI-written answers, called AI Overviews, at the top of many searches — they currently appear in roughly two out of three local searches. Google has also rolled out an AI Mode that lets people ask questions in a back-and-forth conversation, the way you’d talk to a person. The result: about 60% of searches now end without anyone clicking through to a website, because the answer is right there on the page.
That can sound alarming if your business depends on being found online. But the full picture is a lot more encouraging — especially for local businesses.
The good news for local businesses
When someone searches for something nearby — “coffee near me,” “plumber in Pleasant Hill” — Google still shows the familiar map and business listings in more than 90% of those searches. People haven’t stopped using Google either: 95% of Americans still use a traditional search engine every month. And reviews matter more than ever — 98% of consumers check reviews before choosing a business.
Here’s the key thing to understand: Google’s AI doesn’t invent its answers. It builds them from your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews, and how consistently your business information appears across the internet. Which means the way to show up in AI answers is mostly the same way you show up in regular search — done well.
Five things worth doing this month
- Complete your Google Business Profile — every field. Hours, services, description, photos, questions and answers. Google’s AI leans heavily on this profile, and adding fresh photos regularly tells Google you’re active.
- Ask for reviews, and reply to all of them. The AI actually reads review content and tone. A steady stream of genuine reviews — with thoughtful replies from you — is one of the strongest signals you can send.
- Keep your name, address, and phone number identical everywhere. Your website, your Google profile, Facebook, directories — small mismatches confuse the AI and cost you trust.
- Answer real customer questions on your website. Pages that plainly answer “How much does it cost?”, “How does the process work?”, and “Do you offer…?” are exactly what AI Overviews quote.
- Keep your website fresh. A site that hasn’t changed in years signals a business that might not be open. Even small monthly updates help.
You don’t have to master AI — just the basics
The businesses that win in AI search are the ones with accurate, active, helpful information online. That’s it. You don’t need to understand the technology — you need your online presence to clearly say who you are, what you do, and why customers love you.
