Our Community
The city of Pleasant Hill, Iowa was incorporated May 12, 1956. At the conclusion of the 2024 special census, the population was 11,079 and we are 4th fastest growing city in the Des Moines Metro area.
Metro Waste Authority: Public Landfill Tour

Ever wonder where your garbage goes after it leaves the curb, how yard waste becomes compost, or what happens to those old appliances you toss out?
Join Metro Waste Authority on Saturday, June 28, for a behind-the-scenes look at it all!
From 3-5 PM, the agency is offering a free, self-paced driving tour of Metro Park East Landfill, the largest landfill in Iowa.
The educational tour, which will take about 30 minutes to complete, will follow the journey of your garbage, recycling, and yard waste once it arrives at the site. Along the way, you'll see waste disposal zones, habitat preservation areas, and some of the landfill’s most innovative recycling efforts.
Enjoy informative audio clips at each stop, take part in a fun scavenger hunt, and get an up-close view of a garbage truck and other large equipment!
